The Dramatic History Of Spinalonga
The small
island of Spinalonga is located north of the gulf of Elounda, a strategically
important location for the protection from pirates. The total extent of the
place does not exceed the 85 acres. Perimeter is a fortification wall that was
probably built in antiquity and later strengthened by the Venetians.
Although
its history as a fortified castle during the Middle Ages is extremely
important, Spinalonga became known for its recent history since the place was
used by the Greek state as part of the exile of lepers, where in the following years
became part of their permanent residence.
In 1903 the
authorities of Crete decided to create a Hospital for lepers in order to
provide more coordinated help to those suffering from Hansen's disease. While
in the beginning it aimed to accommodate the sick only from Crete, in time
patients from all over Greece began to arrive.
Testimonies,
documentaries and films vividly describe this kind of social network that was
created in this place, a society that was united by the same disease but that
tried to adapt to a more normal way of life.
