The Dramatic History Of Spinalonga
In the prefecture of Lassithi is a small island that was one of the most important Venetian castles on the island. In history, however, it remained as the island of lepers, the famous Spinalonga. The small island of Spinalonga is located north of the gulf of Elounda, a strategically important location for the protection from pirates. The total extent of the place does not exceed the 85 acres. Perimeter is a fortification wall that was probably built in antiquity and later strengthened by the Venetians. Although its history as a fortified castle during the Middle Ages is extremely important, Spinalonga became known for its recent history since the place was used by the Greek state as part of the exile of lepers, where in the following years became part of their permanent residence.
